Adapting to Change: Fish and the Quagga Mussel Invasion in the Great Lakes

The Great Lakes face significant ecological challenges due to the invasion of quagga mussels. While these invasive species have disrupted the ecosystem, some fish have shown remarkable adaptability. This post explores how certain fish species adjust to the presence of quagga mussels and asks the question: Is there an upside to the mussel invasion?

Fish Adapting to Quagga Mussels

Quagga mussels, along with zebra mussels, have significantly altered the Great Lakes ecosystem. These mussels filter out plankton and algae, crucial components of the aquatic food web. This filtering process clears the water but removes essential nutrients, disrupting the food chain and affecting native species1. Despite these challenges, some fish species have adapted to the new conditions. For example, round gobies, an invasive fish species, thrive by feeding on quagga mussels. This adaptation has, in turn, benefited fish that prey on gobies, such as walleye and lake trout2.

The Upside of the Mussel Invasion – Cisco restoration in the Great Lakes

While the overall impact of quagga mussels remains negative, their presence has created opportunities for certain ecological restoration efforts. The decline in overall fish numbers has opened space for the restoration of cisco, often referred to as the “forgotten heart” of the Great Lakes ecosystem. Cisco, a native fish species, plays a crucial role in the food web. Recent efforts to reintroduce cisco have shown early signs of success, offering hope for the recovery of this important species3.

Restoring the River-Run Whitefish

Another ambitious project focuses on restoring the long-lost “river-run” whitefish. Historically, these whitefish migrated from the Great Lakes into rivers to spawn. However, habitat degradation and other factors led to their decline. Researchers now aim to re-establish these river runs by improving river conditions and creating suitable spawning habitats. If baby fish struggle to survive in the Great Lakes, they might find refuge in the rivers that flow into them4.

Broader Efforts and Future Directions – Cisco restoration Great Lakes

The fight against quagga mussels’ forms part of a larger effort to manage invasive species in the Great Lakes. Various organizations and researchers explore multiple strategies, including chemical treatments, biological controls, and public awareness campaigns5. The goal involves developing a comprehensive management plan that combines these methods to effectively control and eventually eradicate quagga mussels from the Great Lakes.

Conclusion

The quagga mussel invasion has undoubtedly posed significant challenges to the Great Lakes ecosystem. However, the adaptability of certain fish species and the opportunities for ecological restoration offer a glimmer of hope. By continuing to explore innovative solutions and restoration efforts, we can work towards a healthier and more balanced Great Lakes ecosystem.
