Hunters popularly identify higher white-fronted geese as “speckle bellies” or “specks.” These geese, the least hunted yet most fascinating of prairie geese, have evolved over the decades. Thirty years ago, they were almost unheard of in much of Alberta. Their narrow fall migratory path confined them to west-central Saskatchewan and the slim eastern edge of Alberta. As a guide for waterfowl hunters southeast of Edmonton in the early 1990s, sightings and hunts for these birds was rare. However, the scenario has transformed significantly since then.

Growing Populations and Expanded Paths

Over the past few decades, speckle belly populations have grown. Their migratory path has expanded, providing more hunters the opportunity to target them. Initially, hunting these geese with traditional Canada goose methods yielded limited success. However, with time and experience, more hunters have learned to outsmart these notoriously cautious birds.

Recently, I sat down with two experienced hunters. Claudio Ongaro, a well-known Alberta outfitter, and Mark DesRoches, an outfitter and traveling hunter who has hunted all 41 of North America’s waterfowl species, shared their insights. They revealed the techniques developed over the years to consistently and successfully hunt these tasty birds.

According to these experts. Traditional Canada goose hunting tactics don’t work well with speckle bellies. Hunters must adapt and innovate to increase their chances of success.
