Great Bear Lodge is the ultimate destination
The Ultimate Fishing Adventure at Great Bear Lodge
If you’re dreaming of trophy lake trout and the fishing trip of a lifetime, Great Bear Lodge is the ultimate destination. Nestled on the pristine shores of Great Bear Lake in the Northwest Territories, this lodge offers anglers the perfect combination of expert guidance, breathtaking scenery, and world-class fishing opportunities. Here’s how one unforgettable trip unfolded, showcasing why this iconic lodge is the top choice for anglers seeking their next personal best.
The Morning of Promise
The morning air carried the distinct scent of baitfish as we launched from the lodge for a 34-kilometer journey to a spot known as “The Bluffs.” The stillness of the water was punctuated by Arctic terns diving for insects, a sure sign that the fish were feeding below. With Hawg Nose plugs trolling at 21 feet, anticipation was high.
Our guide, Reid Stoyberg, exuded confidence. After scouting this area throughout the season, he had already helped guests land impressive lake trout, especially the elusive “gray morphs.” These apex predators, the largest of the four trout species in Great Bear Lake, feast on whitefish, Arctic grayling, ciscoes, and smaller trout. They may be few in number, but the ones you catch are giants.
Great Bear Lodge: A Fisherman’s Dream Base
The ride from Great Bear Lodge to the fishing grounds may have started chilly, but the July sun soon warmed the air, and layers came off as the lake revealed its magic. The water’s surface temperature hovered at an unusually warm 64°F—much higher than the seasonal average of 40°F. Still, the lake trout lurking in cooler depths were ready to bite.
Within minutes, I reeled in two respectable 20-pounders, quickly releasing them back into the water. Sharing the boat was Michael Hunter, a renowned Toronto chef and owner of Antler, a restaurant famous for its game-inspired cuisine. It wasn’t long before Michael’s rod bent under the weight of a true giant.
Michael Hunter’s Record-Breaking Catch
When Michael’s catch finally surfaced, it was clear this was no ordinary fish. At 45 pounds, the lake trout was a true monster, a personal best for the celebrated chef. As he cradled the fish for a quick photo, he declared it the largest trout he had ever caught, a memory etched forever in his fishing career.

A Return to Great Bear Lodge
For me, this trip marked a return to Great Bear Lake after my first visit in 2008. While Michael set his personal record. I still had my sights set on topping my 37-pound lake trout caught back in 2005 on Saskatchewan’s Milton Lake. With every outing at Great Bear Lodge, I’m reminded why this place is so special.
